Upon its release in March 1986, A New Generation gained mostly negative critical attention; some of its key elements received comparisons to the German legend and 's. I was surprised when I sat down and watched it about 10 years later and saw that the animation for the time was excellent. And when I recently found the movie in my storage room and watched it again, I found that I still loved it! However, when I was in the target age group for this movie, I didn't even notice, nor would it have mattered if I did. My favorites being Growing Up and Forever Young. It's splitting the kiddie audience with the Disney reissue, Sleeping Beauty, and neither is luring them in big numbers. The care bears movies have always had such good songs. The big problem however as most people have pointed out was that this story contradicts the original. The evil force, Dark Heart, is determined to distinguish the world of these bears. Recognised for their deeds of caring the stars offer them safe haven and a home above the Earth and among the stars. Yes I admit the dialogue is corny and the story is a bit poorly told at times. Again this movie can teach everyone at all ages about morality. In A New Generation, the Bears and Cousins received their symbols when they were orphan Cubs.
I was worried that my daughter might get the wrong idea. As I got older I learned to prefer this one. Once again I liked all the songs. Unfortunately some of the songs do drag, but this movie does have it's share of good songs. My favourite is Swift Heart Rabbit.
What I do think is that this film is too dark for infants, but as you get older you learn to treasure it since you understand it more, it doesn't seem as dark as it was back when you were a child. The writers tried to include a Disney-ish wit in this film, but they ended up making the whole film a joke. The Bears and Cousins search for the Family members, before Dark Heart imprisons them—first in cages, then inside big hanging from a chandelier. Kenner announced the introduction of the Cubs in 1985, shortly before the film opened, and showcased them at the in February 1986. It has a deeper plot, better character development, and the tunes especially the closing song are both catchy and warm-hearted.
This movie does contradict the first. This is the worst movie so far for Nostalgia Critic Month but sadly it's going to get much worse with 1987. The cubs are rescued by their guardians, but only after a frightening fight scene where the girl is accidentally zapped to another world and only the caring of all including the viewer will bring her back. This movie does contradict the first one as far as the origins of the Care Bears and the Care Bear Cousins goes. Ten stars for a very good movie. After a swim in the lake, the campers say goodbye to the Bears and Cousins; the former Dark Heart promises to be a better person at camp. I think it is a wonderful movie. They eventually defeat dark heart in the end and watchers get to relearn som e important lessons about caring. They escape by following a rainbow up to the sky, while the boat transforms into the Cloud Clipper.
