It will easily remove and reveal a small white fabic tab to the filter itself. Somewhere inline there should be a filter. Disconnect the fuel line which will have residual pressure in the line.
Then lift the fuel pump half way up. It is secured to the firewall with a clip. Remove the bottom seat cushion which gives you access to the fuel pump cover plate. The fuel filter in a 2002 Nissan Altima is located in the fuel tank and is a non-serviceable item. This will greatly cut down on the mess. Then, on left + right-sides, toward the lower cushon, there will be a bolt, remove them. I found my car now idles smoother and though this my be in my head the engine seems to run smoother overall.
