Also once the truck is turned off and the key is out it will still do this because I can see the gauges drop below zero and come back to zero. A few other things went crazy at the same time - the seat belt warning sound went off even though we were all wearing the seat belt; the door lock and unlocked constantly; the clutch make noises. When the letter was received the contact did not have an issue with the instrument cluster on the vehicle. In some cases the speedometer is dead. It did go back to 0 within a few a days; however, it is again showing 20 mph at a dead stop. I have researched and found many reports of this problem. Hope this helps someone else.
Also note that improperly installed wiring tapping power and ground in the wrong locations can create challenging. You guys know that all you have to do is tell the dealer you are having instrument panel issues and the dealer will replace the cluster free of charge, no mileage or time limit at least for 03-04 gm pickups, denalis, yukon etc. Could it be a low battery and resultant volatge drop upon cranking the engine keeps the display from working? Most of the time it is fine but occasionally it will register a different speed than what we are traveling. Does anyone know how much this would cost out of warranty? The manufacturer mailed the contact a letter regarding the defect with the instrument cluster. The contact stated that all of the instrument panel gauges were defective and did not provide an accurate reading. The failure mileage was 55,000. I was able to repair the damage however I only accelerated because I thought I was traveling at ten miles per hour. I am thankful that gm designed this to fail with power loss rather than full power Toyota , but I believe this is a safety concern none the less. The Gauges themselves work fine as well as the Climate Control but the Lights don't. While he was checking the codes, the panel began working properly again.
Perhaps it is possible that the dimmer is stuck in a 'off' or 'low' setting and has since been rendered unresponsive. Hope this helps someone else. It will jump from 0 to 120 mph and stick somewhere in between or give a false mph reading or just go to zero and register nothing.
